Apple and thyme rice // Arroz de maçã e tomilho

I had a hiccup crisis this afternoon. One of those nerve-wrecking, forget-about-everything-else, ah-it's-gone-iCC!-no-still-here ones. The more I wanted to speak to my friend, whose eyes grew larger and larger and whose smile slowly turned more and more into a smirk, the more hiccups came. And all because of... green apples. Yes, green apples give me hiccups.

Here is an apple and thyme rice recipe I do as a side dish to hot dishes and whenever I miss my apples (I don't get hiccups from cooked apples).

Hulk's breakfast bowl
Heat some olive oil in a saucepan. Add 1 chopped green apple and fry for 2 minutes. Add 1 cup of rice (best with fine, loose grain rice, such as basmati or thai; I used Bom Sucesso's lovely aromatic rice - "arroz aromático") and let if fry, stirring so it won't stick to the pan. Pour 2 cups of water and let it cook for 7 minutes. Add some dried thyme and a pinch of salt, give it just a quick stir and let it cook for another minute.

Tonight I served it with chicken tikka (recipe here), but used a lemon flavoured Greek yogurt.

Doesn't this sight make you go all "nom nom nom nom nom"?
I'm in for the Receitas de Sedução // Orivárzea challenge with this recipe.

Sim, maçãs verdes dão-me soluços.

Adiciona 1 maçã verde picada e frita-a durante 2 minutos.

  1. Don't you hate it when you get a hiccup attack? So annoying! And one's so helpless. Lovely dish - and I'd definitely risk hiccups to taste it. ;-) Thanks for this.

    1. It's - not - funny! Ok, it is. :P Particularly when I'm telling someone
"oh no I can't have an apple now, I'll embarrass myself"
      "Nonsense."
      "Hic!" :P

This way I can have my apples and make the rice sweeter and fresher. :)

  10. Very interesting recipe, slightly sweet, slightly tart and aromatic from the Thyme. I really hope that you have gotten over your hiccups by now. Have you ever tried the trick of bending over and try to drink out of your glass backwards. Hiccups are a little trapped bubble of air. This method works quite good with my kids. Next time give it a try. Take Care, BAM

    1. Oh, I'll try it next time and I'll tell you how it went. It's so frustrating because I really love apples but I'm always afraid of the first bite - and there they come: hiccups and more hiccups.
